“Pep Clotet has been appointed caretaker head coach and the remainder of the coaching and backroom staff – including Sean Rush, Darryl Flahavan, Ryan Needs and James Beattie – stay in place.

“Pep takes charge of team affairs with immediate effect.”

The statement reflected on the “significant challenges” the club had faced balancing the books off the field, but maintained there would be improvements to the squad, with the owners “committed to continued investment – we will do so sensibly and effectively”.

Garry Monk on brink at Birmingham City after total breakdown

Garry Monk’s future as Birmingham manager has been plunged into doubt after a fallout with the Championship club hierarchy.Monk is facing the exit at St. Andrew’s following a total breakdown in his relationship with influential chief executive Xuandong Ren.It is understood Monk and Ren have clashed on numerous occasions but a recent meeting over the club’s strategy for next season has now raised the genuine prospect of the manager leaving.Sources have claimed that Ren, known at the club as ‘Dong’, was even openly discussing the potential sacking of Monk with club staff on Wednesday at the training ground.

Monk is believed to be planning ahead for the new season, and has no intention of quitting, yet his future is certainly in doubt at this stage as Ren considers his next move. His departure after 15 months in charge would be a huge blow to the club’s supporters and raise fresh questions over the power wielded by Ren.Last season the former Swansea manager was forced to work under significant restrictions, operating under a business plan which only allowed him to sign loans and free transfers.

It is understood that Monk and Ren have fallen out over the club’s financial position, with the sale of Jota to arch-rivals Aston Villa earlier this month a particular frustration. The departure of Jota removed a transfer embargo but Birmingham’s finances remain a huge concern and there are even fears the club could suffer further punishment in the season ahead.Birmingham’s board, for their part, are also unhappy with Monk’s style of play, with the lack of home wins a source of concern.

Appointed in March last year, Monk is now facing the end of his tenure in a move which will infuriate the club’s long-suffering fanbase.Birmingham were heavily criticised for dismissing Gary Rowett in December 2016 and sacking Monk, after the poor appointments of Harry Redknapp and Gianfranco Zola, would place owners Trillion Trophy Asia under renewed scrutiny.

Birmingham were hit with a nine-points deduction by the EFL for breaching financial regulations
