Christmas Holiday Safety Tips For Your Family

Christmas Safety Tips Your Family Needs to Know

This post is sponsored by on behalf of Erie Insurance.
Holiday mishaps are a staple of some of our favorite Christmas movies. We’ve all laughed at the frustrated dad who blew a fuse or the Christmas tree that went up in smoke. Unfortunately, in real life, these mishaps aren’t so funny. And they are all too common during the holiday season.

The holidays are a wonderful time to gather with our family and friends to enjoy the warmth and joy of the season. And you can keep those good times going (and those mishaps on the screen where they belong) by following a few simple Christmas safety tips.

Christmas Safety Tips Your Family Needs to Know

Christmas Tree Safety

Christmas trees are often the centerpiece of our holiday decor, but they can also be a danger zone. According to a study by the National Fire Safety Protection Association, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 200 house fires a year that was started by Christmas trees. There are a few things you need to do to keep your tree from becoming a hazard in your home.

  • Water your live tree every day. Make sure your tree is fresh and keep it that way with a daily dose of water. And if you have pets, check the water more frequently in case they are sneaking a drink.
  • Check your lights before placing them on the tree. Toss any that look frayed or have damaged bulbs or plugs.
  • Place the tree away from heat sources, fireplaces, or candles.
  • Turn off the tree lights when you are not home and before you go to bed.
  • Do not overload your power strip.

Staying Safe with Kids and Pets

When you have young children and pets in your family like I do you need to follow a few extra precautions to keep everyone safe at Christmas time.

  • Use caution with candles. Battery operated ones are the safest with kids and pets around, but if you do use real flames be sure they are well out of reach and completely extinguished before you leave the room.
  • Keep breakable decorations high and out of reach of both kids and animals – you don’t want glass shattering and causing a hazard.
  • Keep your tree off-limits or secure it to the wall if it is too much of temptation for either your very young children or your pets. You don’t want the tree to topple from curious climbers.
  • Be aware of holiday plants and treats that may be toxic to your pets. Do your research before bringing new plants into your home and keep holiday goodies away from your pets (get them their own special treats instead).

Erie Insurance has even more great tips on how to keep your home, family, and guests safe during the holiday season. Click here to read them all, and be sure to check out their family-friendly Very Merry Mishap Special. It’s filled with great information that will keep your holiday mishap-free, except of course for the ones in your favorite movie.

Happy Juneteenth 2019 When and What is it ?

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19 that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Across the country, the day is marked with events and parades.

What is Juneteenth?

On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger came to Galveston, Texas, to inform a reluctant community that President Abraham Lincoln two years earlier had freed the slaves and to press locals to comply with his directive.

Why did it take so long for the news to get to Texas?

There is no one reason why there was a 2½-year delay in letting Texas know about the abolition of slavery in the United States, according to The historical site said some accounts place the delay on a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news, while others say the news was deliberately withheld.

Despite the delay, slavery did not end in Texas overnight, according to an article by Henry Louis Gates Jr. originally posted on The Root. Gates said after New Orleans fell, many slavers traveled to Texas with their slaves to escape regulations enforced by the Union Army in other states.

The slave owners were placed with the responsibility of letting their slaves know about the news, and some delayed relaying the information until after the harvest, Gates said.

Where does the name “Juneteenth” come from?

Get the Daily Briefingnewsletter in your inbox.Start your day with the morning’s top newsDelivery: DailyYour Emailjuneteenth, which is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a combination of “June” and “nineteenth,” in honor of the day that Granger announced the abolition of slavery in Texas.

How to celebrate Juneteenth?

Many celebrate by attending festivals, concerts, parades, barbecues, by calling attention to modern inequality or by supporting black-owned businesses.Through her media consulting agency, T. Marie Consulting, Tiandra Robinson created “502 Black Business Week.”This week, more than 40 Louisville black-owned businesses are offering deals, promotions and discounts.

June 19 marks a special celebration for communities around the United States. Celebrated as Juneteenth, — a combination of “June” and “nineteenth” — the holiday recognizes when the United States ended its historic practice of slavery, legally and in the real world. In this sense, Juneteenth is a day for commemorating the “freedom” of all people living in the United States.

Whether you grew up celebrating Juneteenth or have never heard of it, here’s what you need to know about how the holiday came to be and why it matters to so many people.

How did Juneteenth get started?

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863; it was intended, many were told, to free all slaves. But in August 1862, President Lincoln wrote an open letter to Horace Greeley, the editor of the New York Tribune, in which he described his actions as intent to preserve the Union rather than to abolish slavery.

How do people celebrate Juneteenth?

In 1866, the year after Granger’s order, the first Juneteenth anniversary celebration happened. Since then, celebrations in certain regions of the United States have continued the tradition of honoring this important day. In 1872, a group of former slaves put together $800 and purchased 10 acres of land in Houston, Texas, for the city’s annual Juneteenth celebrations, and they named the space Emancipation Park, where Juneteenth celebrations are held even now. Year after year since, small pockets of the United States have erupted in celebration of the day when everybody in the U.S. was declared free, while the day has gone largely unnoticed in the majority of the country.

What is a Vsco and How To Be a Vsco Girl

What is VSCO and is it okay for Girls?

Have you seen links to a website called “” in your kid’s Instagram profile or that of their friends? If not you might soon and you’ll be like me, wondering, what the heck is VSCO?  As is my nature, I immediately clicked the links, visited the website and downloaded VSCO to see what this photo app is all about.

VSCO, also called VSCO Cam, is a photography app where you can create an account and upload or take photos, edit and add filters, and share them with other VSCO users or on other social media sites.  The app was launched in 2012 by Visual Supply Company.  They also sell presets (collections of filters for editing) for use in photo editing software programs.

Is VSCO an Instagram replacement?

Probably not.  A key difference between VSCO and Instagram is that there is limited social interaction.  There are no “likes”, there is no commenting on photos.  VSCO seems to have a reputation for more “serious” photography enthusiasts.  The emphasis is on great looking photos and not how many likes or comments you can get. This is even part of the app description: “Because beautiful imagery trumps social clout, the number of followers, comments, and likes are absent from the platform”.

And that might be a reason that teens are starting to use VSCO.  Since my daughter uses this app I asked her what would make her want to share a photo to VSCO and not Instagram.  She mentioned that on VSCO, not as many people she knows will see it – perhaps giving her a bit more freedom to experiment with her photos, without judgement.

While there is no direction interaction within the app, you can easily share a photo from VSCO to other networks for that social commentary.  This can be done directly from the app using the app’s sharing options.  Or you can save the photo from VSCO to your phone’s photo library, then upload it to Instagram or anywhere else.  You can easily share someone else’s photo too – not just your own.  I actually did this by mistake – oops – and the originator of that photo did receive a notification (yep, my daughter).  Some use the app just to edit and use the filters, then share to other social networks such as Instagram.  This was readily observed during an Instagram search for the hashtag #vsco – 72,817,000 posts! And 109,909,984 tagged with #vscocam.

How to be Vsco Girl ?

What Is VSCO Girl?

You’ve heard of the basic social media platforms that teens are using: Snapchat, Instagram, and maybe Twitter. You may even use a few of these platforms yourself. One you may not have heard about? VSCO.

VSCO is a photo-sharing app that has become quite popular with high schoolers. Similar to Instagram, the app allows users to edit and add filters to photos before sharing them. Users can use the filters and save their photos without sharing them on the network if they prefer.

VSCO is restricted to users 13 years of age and older. Users must at a minimum provide a username and email. The username also does not necessarily need to be a user’s name, so users can choose to be anonymous if they would like. There is also the option of providing a first and last name as well as a short biography.

Unlike most social media platforms, VSCO does not have like or comment features. Users also can’t see who is following them. Many have praised the app for taking a step away from the social media culture of counting likes and followers, as they believe it takes away some of the stress of posting.

VSCO is also reported to have a more “artistic” feel than Instagram or other photo-sharing apps. It defines itself as an art and technology company, and has more “serious” editing features than Instagram. Because of this, many users have VSCO as an account to share their more artistic photos and practice their photography skills.

The privacy settings that VSCO offers are slim to none. Users don’t have the option to make their accounts private, so anyone can see their photos that they share. VSCO also has a default setting that shares the location that any picture is taken or shared at. If users don’t opt to turn off the feature, anyone can see these locations.

What’s even more problematic about VSCO is the types of photos that many teenagers are sharing. Because fewer parents are aware of VSCO (sorry parents), teenagers often use it to share their riskier photos. These can range from pictures with liquor bottles and vape pens to selfies dressed inappropriately.

Users need to remember that just because some adults don’t know about VSCO doesn’t mean that it’s okay to share some of these images. Digital footprints last forever, and pictures that teenagers think are okay to post now may reflect poorly on them when applying for schools or jobs.

VSCO can be a great opportunity for parents to have a conversation with kids about what should and should not be shared online. Having this conversation can make teenagers more comfortable with talking to their parents about issues they are having online and demonstrates to teens that their parents can be a useful source of information should they need any help.
